ITEMS is a web-based platform for creating, archiving and running tasks and tests. Designed for empirical educational research, it makes test development more efficient and collaborative. Since 2011, Cap3 has been developing the system for the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel. Today, ITEMS supports the full test development process and is widely used in large-scale educational studies.

ITEMS was developed with two main requirements in mind: reusable tasks across diverse test scenarios and a consistent, scientifically sound layout. Beyond this, the platform had to support location-independent collaboration and device-agnostic digital testing. Additional challenges included ensuring scalability for task maintenance and creating a modular architecture that is easily expandable – enabling new test formats, exportable task collections and use in large-scale research collaborations.

Together with the IPN, Cap3 has created ITEMS – a web-based, modular platform that adapts flexibly to different test formats and requirements. It offers central task pool management and guarantees a consistent, scientifically sound layout. With role-based access, editors, reviewers and administrators can collaborate seamlessly from anywhere while meeting strict data protection standards. Digital tests run device- and platform-independent, and automated analyses plus export options ensure reliable evaluation. Its open architecture makes ITEMS future-proof and ready to grow with new features.
